Even though it isn't until about 18 months that a child begins to start recognizing colour I enjoy this activity because it does more then just help with colour identification! When we play with our colour basket I always talk about each of the items as we explore it, making sure to use descriptive words such as, size, colour and texture. This helps with language development and their ability to identify the different things. I also try to include a variety of objects with different textures, shapes and sizes to add to the sensory side of the activity. These baskets are a great way to introduce colours and they are a great opportunity for open-ended exploration.
